The School of the New York Times Summer Academy
Our NYC Summer Academy gives intellectually curious high school students the opportunity to live and learn in New York City while studying topics in journalism, media, technology, arts, culture, sports, fashion, business, science and more. Each two-week course draws on the expertise and unrivaled access of The New York Times and encourages students to take their learning beyond the classroom and into the real world. Parsons Pre-College Programs
Pre-College Academy classes meet on Saturday mornings for 11 weeks in the fall and spring semesters and every weekday for two weeks in the summer. A wide selection of age-appropriate courses are offered, on subjects including animation, fashion, graphic design, interior design, drawing, painting, cartooning, photography, and portfolio development. Parsons also offers a certificate program for students in grades 9 through 12 who plan to apply to art and design colleges. If you are entering the 11th or 12th grade, consider enrolling in our popular Portfolio Development course, which helps students prepare artwork and presentations for college admission applications. Finally, Parsons offers the Parsons Scholars art and design pre-college program for 10th grade students from NYC public schools. This program offers scholarships to talented young students from lower-income families to study design at the college level. Parsons Scholars also explore the range of art and design careers and acquire skills and knowledge that will help them gain admittance to and succeed at Parsons or any other college of art and design. Two- and four-week institutes offered in a variety of topics such as “STEMinism,” leadership, art and design, and writing. Partial and full need-based scholarships are available for students who apply by February 28th. Pratt’s summer Pre-College provides students with an opportunity to build their art and design skills, create a portfolio of their work, and explore possibilities for study and employment in creative fields. This intensive, four-week (July 6-31, 2021), pre-college program is for individuals 15 and older who wish to study at one of the top art and design colleges in the country. Serious young artists seeking to strengthen and enhance their art and design skills, as well as students with limited art training, are invited to participate. Scholarships are awarded based on need, portfolio and GPA.

The Cooper Union Summer STEM Program
The Albert Nerken School of Engineering at the Cooper Union offers a Summer STEM Program, a three-week (for freshmen) or six-week (for sophomores and juniors) intensive that immerses current high school students in hands-on engineering design and problem-solving. Faculty and teaching assistants from the departments of civil, chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering provide students with foundational knowledge and expert guidance to address real-world problems in their respective disciplines of expertise. The PREFACE program is for rising 11th and 12th grade students (current 10th and 11th grade students). It is a 2 week program for students who have been historically underserved in STEM fields and who have an interest in pursuing these areas in higher education/careers. NYU Precollege offers rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience academic and student life at New York University. This academically rigorous program places high school students in six-week, intensive, college-level courses with current college students and allows them to gain academic credit, which may be applied to a future degree. They offer a limited number of partial-scholarships to students who demonstrate a high level of financial need and apply by March 25 (see “Tuition and fees” section). The Baruch College Leadership Academy introduces rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders to the college experience. This enhanced curriculum at the Academy introduces students to a variety of advanced subject matter. The broad program content ranges from Financial Markets to Social Justice and Philosophical studies in order for students to discover their passions in addition to mastering the college admissions process. Not only do the students receive a well-rounded academic program, but they also experience broader New York City with trips to exciting locations that bring fun to summer. New York Historical Society Student Historian Internship Program
Student Historian interns are high school students who use the resources of NY Historical to conduct exciting research and share their scholarship through creative digital projects. Interns meet with professional staff to learn about careers in the museum, library and history fields; work collaboratively with fellow students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills; and engage in hands-on work to deepen their understanding of American history and art. The theme of the program is We the People: Democracy from Athens to America. The program is unpaid, though interns with demonstrated financial need may be offered a stipend. The Met High School Internship Program offers paid opportunities for students who are two to three years from graduating high school (in grades 10 and 11) or obtaining their High School Equivalency degree and who, on the application deadline date, either reside in or attend a high school or home school in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut. Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides workshops on job readiness, career exploration, financial literacy, and opportunities to continue education and social growth. SYEP participants between the ages of 14 and 24 are connected to paid summer employment for up to six weeks in July and August. This year, programs are located in select Department of Education schools, select NYCHA communities, and community-based organizations in all five boroughs of New York City. ExpandED Options:
In ExpandED Options, you will participate in a credit-worthy apprenticeship to prepare you to work with children over the summer. In the apprenticeship you will: learn the fundamentals of a field, learn how to instruct and coach groups of young people, practice teaching after school, and earn a paid summer internship. Interns will be placed at summer camps around NYC and internships will begin in late June for 6-8 weeks, depending on the site. Interns work 20-25 hours per week and will earn a minimum hourly wage of $15 for the summer internship.
